IndieCade 2013: A Tangle of Traditions

We continue in the IndieCade tradition—to inspire and challenge the norm: games to inspire, computer games without screens, play without computers, play without games!

In putting together the 2013 conference, we take advantage of the gathering of the intersecting indie tribes to focus on our future, the continued maturing of our work. We bring out the amazing diversity of our communities in a forum for up-and-comers and the well-known alike. And we tease out rising trends and concerns of game-makers from a diverse range of genres and communities. Instead of being content with celebrating our rising importance, we dig in and look closely at topics ranging from sound games to sound in games, from Twine as a text-based story-driven platform to cinematic influence in indie games, and from games as a means of personal expression to games as party-starters.

A lot has changed for indie games since IndieCade started back in 2007. Back then, Passage had just been released, Braid was still a year from release, and Flow was not yet released for the PS3. Just six years later, and the indie game scene has grown in ways few thought possible—we’re dominating award shows, successful devs have started backing up-and-coming games, and developers are showing us so many new ways to expand the potential of games and the play experiences they provide. While the last six years have been amazing for indie games, there is so much more we have to do.

Join us as we talk to makers without borders crafting toys, playgrounds, puzzle-bending brains, indie cinema envy, textual tangles, and sound as interface. Come, play and make games with us. Let’s get inspired and chart the course of indie games! .

Professional Conference vs. Festival Plus:

Over the past six years IndieCade’s conference has grown in stature and in size. In an attempt to maintain the intimacy of the professional conference, this year IndieCade has branched out and the conference chairs have created additional programming as part of the Festival for those who are not attending the professional conference. Access to those sessions along with other benefits is now called Festival Plus. It is a great opportunity and our first year of trying this so you will have to let us know how it goes.

In case that is confusing, All Access has access to everything (including the Ivy Substation Theater and the Fosahy Lodge Theater), while Festival Plus has access to everything in the IndieCade Village. And of course, all level of access get to play the games!!
