MEETUP is not one version of the mobile game developers release but is continuing to release new versions of it whenever 40 families meet and play at the family party. We want to design the game platform available to contain real-relationship of the specific communities in reality. Since we started to develop the game of MEETUP, at the same time, we've running family party atmosphere workshops in the art studio for 40 families can create collage paper masks for converting later to the game characters of MEETUP with their unique story. The workshop takes approximately 2 hours to complete the new each version of MEETUP and 40 characters who request to connect other characters by dragging are created with helps of two game designers and two artists. The story of game is following the way of our lives, "Meetup" someone everyday.
"We are an art collaborative project team based on the FAMILYPLAY LAB. Overall, the project is responsible Nahyung Kim, culture planner. Shinae Kim, the game graphic designer, and Chaegon Chang who is running the game development company Gongun-games, produce the game with several associated young game designers and families participating in our workshops. In addition, Injun Yook, the sound designer and Mina Bae, the communication designer, are working together focusing on creating new family contents for specific offline-communities in real world using the various game platforms. For us, the game is a tool of creation and communication not only commercial products.
'MEETUP project is “All family is the producers.” It is about the art experiment base with researches. It would be a new family culture goes era to create a platform of mobile games. It includes professional game maker with creative art based on the MEETUP project focusing on the new possibilities of contemporary culture. This MEETUP project belongs with FAMILYPLAY LAB, which is willing to have main art exhibition, international art project and scholar symposium and experimental events for all ages. It also regularly collaborates with different partners on each projects.
The impressive moments we can observe players of our game, they often call the real names of their friends as like “Here’s Minsu!” or “I found Jihee!” instead of " I killed them all!" It is because all characters are produced based on the arts workshop which they participate with friends or family in direct. In addition, many parents let their kids play the game rather than stop playing. We think people consider that all characters of MEETUP are their real friends or families who sharing the special experience through the workshop and the game application. It is totally different way to play with anonymous avatars in a game. We believe that all process of the project MEETUP can help binding the community together and continue to design the arts experimental platforms available sharing precious memories with more fun. This is our goal.
