Cantankerous Cats

Cantankerous Cats is a card based parlour game for 2-6 players. Each player assumes the role of a mischievous house cat in a quiet neighborhood. Your primary goal is to bank Affection with your Hoomin while causing Mischief around your house. Each act of Mischief causes you to lose some of your banked Affection. If you are ever caught causing more mischief than you can pay for, you will be forced to roam the neighborhood as a Feral cat. You will be unable to score, but capable of wreaking havoc against the other players until you find a new Hoomin to terrorize.

Developer Info

Mentha Designs is a collective of artists that work in advertising, publications, and video production. Cantankerous Cats is our first venture into game design and our first project that utilizes all of our skill sets to work on something we are passionate about.

Our purpose in the board game space is to create fun, beautiful, easy to understand games for a price that most people can afford.

Developer's Artistic Statement

Cantankerous Cats aims to be a card game where the mechanics of play are driven by the behaviors and pop culture myths that surround domestic house cats. Rather than simply use cats as window dressing, we wanted players to FEEL like they were cats doing what they do best: being adorable and purposefully causing trouble for everything around them.

Our intent is to craft a layered experience that will allow the game to become more interesting as a player becomes more familiar with the rules of the game. In short, we wanted to hit the sweet spot of being simple enough to teach a child, but having enough meat to reward repeated plays with more advanced tactics and strategies.

It is also great to have an excuse to gather your friends for tea and cat stories.
