Spelunk! is a multi-platform, action-adventure game where you assume the role of a spelunking adventuress and her companion Spelo-bot. Digging deep into the earth with your plasma drill, beware of underground creatures and yawning caverns as you set out to make your fortune collecting precious stones and artifacts. How deep can you go?
Ex Nihilo Studios, LLC is the software company of Gil Villarreal, a husband, father to four, and indie game developer. In addition to developing video games for fun and profit, Gil teaches introductory computer programming classes in public and private schools in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado.
For Spelunk!, Ex Nihilo Studios contracted Shroomarts, a talented game artist and designer located in Istanbul, Turkey. During the development of Spelunk!, and eight hour time difference had to be carefully managed to facilitate effective communication between artist and programmer during the 72 hour Jam of LD32.
Gil contacted W. Gregory Turner in Southern, CA for the moody background music of Spelunk! Mr. Turner is an accomplished composer and sound designer who works in the TV, movie, and video game industries. Mr. Turner and Gil worked together during their mutual stint with an independent video game developer in CA.
We wanted to revisit the simple and fun playability of the old arcade classic Dig-Dug, but with a few twists and an updated storyline. Using a custom, procedural map generating algorithm, we are able to create enormous maps reaching many miles down into the earth. Each map is unique and every game is a different experience.
Adding the gameplay element of a companion robot who assists the player in their quest for precious gems, added a unique opportunity to inject plot development, humor, and character interaction that adds to the overall game experience.
