The Coral Cave

The Coral Cave is a 2D point-and-click adventure game set in Okinawa, Japan.
The characters and backgrounds are painted in watercolor and hand-animated on paper.

It tells the story of Mizuka, a little Japanese girl, who lives on a peaceful island, in the Okinawa archipelago. The player will explore a typical Okinawan village, enter a mysterious spirit world and investigate an old tale whose ending has yet to be written.

Developer Info

We, Cecile & Olivier, are a couple of French comic artists who lived several times in Japan. We travelled a lot in the Japanese countryside where we painted numerous watercolour skeches and shot a short film. Back in France, we created the Atelier Sent̫ to spread our love for Japan and search for new ways to tell stories.
The Coral Cave is our first video game. We also create comics set in the same world, run exhibitions about the making of our game and host workshops to teach children how to create videogames with their coloured pencils.

Developer's Artistic Statement

A handpainted game: all the backgrounds and objects in the game are real watercolours. All the characters are animated on paper. We love those techniques and wanted to use them in a game.

The story and the backgrounds are inspired by our numerous stays in Japan and a travel in Okinawa. We drew many watercolour sketches on location which became our main documentation. Many places in the game are real locations we visited. Mizuka, our heroine, and other characters are based on people we met.

Our watercolours in the game have strong pencil lines and vivid colours: we wanted them to look like pages from our travel sketchbook. The immersion of the player in a realistic island was very important to us. We want it to be a travel for the player, to stimulate his curiosity about that culture.
