IndieCade: The International Festivals of Independent Games @ Open Satellite will feature more than two dozen games selected by a prestigious international jury. These games will be displayed in an interactive exhibition and will be complemented by a sequence of speakers, master classes by industry leaders, artist talks and ongoing open game play. The event also includes intimate evening entertainment programs and an award reception.

    • Master Class: A Strategic Approach to Game Design
      There are many ways to approach the design of a new game but not all of them give your team the same chances for success. Geoffrey Zatkin, veteran game designer and president of Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR), explores the best practices in game design from the concept phase to production. In addition to examining current approaches, this class outlines means to optimize the development cycle by showing how to identify key elements of a game early and incorporate the use of data driven decision making to better maintain a high-level, strategic game vision. This master class is appropriate for both new and experienced game designers and game management, as well as members of the game community interested in design and production processes.

    • Master Class: From Indie to Mainstream
      Your indie game is a big hit, and you've got a publishing deal! Now what? What does it take to turn your funky art or garage game hack into the realm of commercial publishing? How can you best take advantage of the expertise publishers have to offer while at the same time maintaining your creative vision? Hear from Jenova Chen the successful developer of fl0w, a master's thesis game that won GDC's Top Downloadable Game of the Year Award as a Sony PS3 game, and Jeep Barnett of Portal fame, about how to safely and successfully navigate the waters from indie to mainstream. This master class is appropriate for new and aspiring game designers, as well as more experienced designers moving into independent game development.

    • Roundtable: The Need for Innovation
      Increasingly, the videogame industry has been turning to indie developers for innovation. But why is innovation important? The game industry makes billions of dollars a year selling mainstream blockbuster hits. Why do they even need innovation? And what will it take for the industry to value innovation more? This discussion led by pioneer alternate reality gamemaker Elan Lee, focuses on the importance of innovation to both the culture and business of gaming. This roundtable is appropriate for new and experienced game designers, as well as publishing and development decision makers and marketing executives. Also recommended for investors.

    • Open Play and Awards Ceremony
      An evening of open play, live entertainment and an awards ceremony celebrating the IndieCade 2008 finalists and awardees. At 8:00 PM, slasher film inspired improv by Blood Squad and a guest D.J.

      • The 2008 interactive exhibition of finalists and awardees of IndieCade: The International Festival of Independent Games
        Open Satellite will be open daily from Noon through 8:00 PM, October 13 through October 17. General admission provides a unique opportunity to play top independent games of the year, many of which are not otherwise available.

        Monday, October 13, 6:00 - 8:00, As a special hightight, the City of Bellevue and the City of Redmond Arts Commission are hosting a special reception and salon discussion on game art. The reception is open to the public as part of general admission.

        The term “game art” usually invokes the high-end graphics of commercial video games. But games and other interactive media are increasingly at home in gallery and museum environments, both as a result of the indie eco-system and acclaimed collaborations between gamemakers and visual artist. Join internationally acclaimed video game artist Jason Rohrer, creator of Passage, and veteran game writer/new media curator and IndieCade Festival Chair Celia Pearce for a dynamic discussion on game creation as a fine art practice.
