Cruel 2 B Kind, created by Alternate Reality gaming pioneer Jane McGonigal, and newsgaming maven Ian Bogost, is a “Big Game” in which players sling compliments at strangers in a highly competitive “assassins"-style game. Players scout through a public place in search of opponents to attack with compliments, serenades, and other “random acts of kindness.” Players receive secret instructions to inflict these on passersby—who may or may not be their actual targets. If they hit a target, the player must surrender and join the team that assassinated them. If they hit a random person on the street—well, who knows what will happen? The game has been played successfully at the Come Out and Play Festival in New York and a number of other public venues.
