Sunless Sea is a nautical roguelike in glorious 2D, presenting a non-linear, choice-heavy, personalised narrative experience.
Welcome to the dark and hilarious Victorian-Gothic underworld of Fallen London, where every choice has a consequence, from the style of your hat to the price of your soul.
Choose your ship, name your captain, and leave the bustle of the docks for the wild and lightless depths of the Unterzee. The map changes every time you play, and every officer in your crew has their own story.
With luck and skill you may achieve your ambitions: find your father’s bones, found a pirate princedom or sail beyond the Unterzee into the strangeness at time’s heart.
Sunless Sea is an extension of Fallen London, our passion-project and a game world that we've been building for almost six years (to the tune of 1.2 million words in the original browser game).
We wanted to reach a new audience and offer our core fans a new way to explore the Neath. We wanted to learn, and stretch ourselves by making a full-on video game for the first time.
Sunless Sea is about loneliness, danger and frequent death. It aims to convey the fragility of a sea voyage, with the addition of black humour that we're known for. As well as stretching our design skills, Sunless Sea was an opportunity for our writers to turn their talents loose on the shores of mysterious and varied islands.
Failbetter Games is a boutique video game studio based in Greenwich, UK. When we began working on Sunless Sea we were a team of 4, now grown to 10. We have a bat skeleton in our office.
