Hero Generations was initiated as a personal expression and experiment in casual/minimalist game design. The core motivation was to convey some non-obvious truths about legacy, the pursuit of personal achievement, and family through gameplay, inspired by my own experience. I was also driven to make the best parts of games like Civilization and Rogue-likes more accessible. "What if you could experience all of the deep and engaging aspects of Civilization in 5 minutes?" was a guiding question throughout development.
Other Design Goals:
-Encourage Long-Term thinking.
-Reduce the pain of permadeath while keeping the meaning/tension in-tact.
-Allow player to explore 1000s of character permutations
-Encourage procedural storytelling through abstraction and emergent systems.
Heart Shaped Games is a small design-centric indie studio with the philosophy of building meaningful and memorable games. Initially founded by designer Scott Brodie, HSG partners with artists and developers (like artist Dominic Sodano and Musician Andrew Riley) all around the world to create games players love.
