Karmaflow was initiated by composer Ivo van Dijk in 2012, and started out as a graduation project for him and 12 fellow students of the School of Arts Utrecht. Since then the team has grown to include not only game designers, artists, programmers and the composer but also a business director, office administrator, marketing-guy, audio-engineers and a lot of volunteers... even a few interns. This group of enthusiastic people, who are working hard for little, now go under the studio name Basecamp.
Both Act I and Act II feature an impressive all star cast of international rock & metal singers and musicians from bands like Epica, Cradle of Filth, Textures, MaYan etc. The score of the videogame and live-show is performed by the world renowned Metropole Orkest (NL), the world's biggest professional pop and jazz orchestra.
Karmaflow: The Rock Opera Videogame started out as a student graduation project. The team behind Karmaflow strives to bring a new and unique way of telling interactive stories through the medium of videogames, and is taking it one step further by bringing the music of Karmaflow to the stage. With Karmaflow different disciplines are merged: it’s a fantastic rock-opera combined with the fun of games.
The combination of different disciplines is a difficult challenge because there has to be an even balance. A balance of how the music, the (visual) design and the interactive element play together. This concept of balance is also very prominently present in the story of Karmaflow with the Karmakeeper seeking to bring the worlds and the flow of karma to an equilibrium.
We are all fans of games such as Journey, the Zelda-series and the darker tone of Darksiders, and we’ve drawn inspiration from these unique fantasy-based art styles. From the outset it was clear that this musical style game requires a certain visual design. The symphonic and metal rock within the game play great together with the fantasy-based art style and the immersive narrative. The theatrical nature of the music lends itself perfectly for the grand and epic story.
