Following a trail of files littering the RELICS virtual desktop; you trespass into the ruins of a fragmented world, suspended within a frozen data stream.
But when the stream begins to thaw, no system can handle this overflow...
This project started as an outlet to experiment, with a vague intention to create something shifting and hypnagogic. Errors and compression artifacts taking on a resemblance to the textures found in sumi-e brush strokes and ink wash painting.
Grown to its current state, a game framed as an emulator of a fictional research system, your computer becomes a prop when downloading and running the program; comparable to found footage as a plot device.
Some of the inspiration behind the project is grounded in reality; remote exploration & sensing, the Mars Curiosity Rover, satellites like the Solar & Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), the Rosetta and New Horizons spacecraft. Methods of sampling and transmitting data, interpretations & visualizations, what is seen versus what is or isn't there.
Extrapolating those technologies and findings to what-if territory is what excites me about them, and is why a sense of mystery in archaeology and the unknown feeds this project. Rather than physically stepping foot in an ancient tomb or archaeological dig, the player is using this emulated system to virtually trespass & recover data from a mysterious source.
Could corroded smartphones discarded as garbage and fragmented Facebook feeds held within be treasured artifacts to researchers in a far off future, to grasp snapshots of a world at some prior time?
Ezra Hanson-White (XRA) is an American artist residing in the Pacific Northwest, born in 1982 in Chicago. He recently formed OUTBOUNDS with intent to further map unusual experiences in games.
