IndieCade Playable Theatre Symposium
August 15-16, 2025

The IndieCade Playable Theater Symposium is back with exciting speakers, conversations, workshops on “playshops” for creators working at the intersection of theatre, games and live action roleplaying.

This year’s Playable Theatre Symposium theme is Crossing Borders, in the broadest possible sense: geography, territory, disciplines, culture, identity, and, of course, the boundaries between performers and audiences…in short any and all borders we are crossing with our work. Speakers will be exploring the many facets of interactive performance—from cultivating communities of play abroad, exploring audience-performer interaction, examining ethical storytelling in this age of misinformation and AI, to broadening both audiences and creators, to celebrating foundational works in the field.

Event is online-only. By attending IndieCade you agree to follow our Code of Conduct.

Here are just some of the amazing sessions from the Playable Theatre Symposium series of events. Access the entire archive by becoming a Playable Theatre or IndieCade member!

The Severance Theory: Welcome to Respite
Stephen Butchko and Deirdre V. Lyons of Ferryman Collective

Watch on Twitch! https://www.twitch.tv/indiecade

Upon visiting your family’s home after your mom’s passing, you are whisked into a forgotten memory from childhood. Each interaction is as meaningful as it is fascinating when you rediscover your past and delight in the simplicities of being a kid once again.

However, something is not quite right. Perhaps it’s the masked tension between your parents. Maybe you are hearing voices that seem to be only in your mind. It could even be that there is a monster hiding in your closet. After all, respite is only temporary when you are at the whim of your own mind.

Welcome to Respite, the first chapter of The Severance Theory, has been critically acclaimed and featured as an Official Selection at prestigious festivals, with its World Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival, its International Premiere at Venice Film Festival, its Asian Premiere at Kaohsiung Film Festival and featured in Raindance Immersive where it won Best Narrative Experience.

Up to 9 Symposium attendees may sign up to join as “Alters” in the VR performance. In order to attend in VR, attendees will need access to one or more of the following: Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S, or PC VR. Signup information has been sent to all registrants.
