Make It Personal: Are We Designing Empathetic Games?

The question of if games can cause empathy is narrowing in. With research surfacing on the topic, we know for certain that games can make players consider others’ experiences, as well as reflect on their own identity. But how does a designer incorporate empathy and sympathy into design? Is it something that manifests through narrative and mechanics or is it something to be shaped? Panelists James Earl Cox III, William Hellwarth, and Cat Wendt will discuss the emotional tethers of their work and their personal experiences working in games. After, the talk will turn into a live discussion about designing practices, and a debate about if they are making empathetic experiences or not. How do our experiences manifest in our games? Do our design sensibilities shape our views?
